Republican Party of Texas: Jim Dunnam "has not lived in the district he represents for years now."
Sep 6th
When the chairman of the Texas House Democratic Caucus goes home, does he stay in the Waco-area district he represents? That’s turf covered -- actually, re-plowed -- by the Republican Party of Texas in an Aug. 30 e-mail blast saying state Rep. Jim Dunnam "has not lived in the district he represents for years now." The party chairman, Steve Munisteri, had earlier levelled the same charge in a Waco press conference. We wondered what was what, and where. Some background: Article 3 of the Texas Constitution says House members must ...
>> MoreMichael McCaul: Says the federal agency in charge of Medicare and Medicaid will disburse $803 billion in benefits this year, making "it larger than all but 15 of the world's economies."
Sep 4th
Republicans balked at President Barack Obama's July decision to appoint the top federal administrator for Medicaid and Medicare without a congressional hearing, saying Congress deserved the chance to quiz the appointee, Donald Berwick, on how he intends to manage the federal behemoth called the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Later that month, U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Austin, chimed in with a financial reason he wishes Berwick had undergone a public grilling: "The CMS will disburse $803 billion in benefits this fiscal year, which makes it larger than all but 15 of the world’s economies." The U.S. Senate ...

>> MoreBill White: Says Rick Perry is a 25-year incumbent.
Sep 3rd
The major gubernatorial candidates seem to get their kicks out of plastering each other with derogatory labels. In Gov. Rick Perry's campaign statements, his Democratic rival is "liberal trial lawyer Bill White." To White's campaign, the GOP governor is "part-time Perry." Another White tactic: bringing attention to Perry's many years as an elected official by calling him a "career politician." Perhaps in that spirit, a Wednesday press release from White linking Perry and a widely expected state budget shortfall pokes at Perry's longevity in an eye-catching secondary headline: "25 year incumbent focuses on re-election ...
>> MoreGreg Abbott: Says a highway was closed in El Paso because of bullets flying across the border.
Sep 1st
Asked last week whether he would support an Arizona-style immigration law in Texas, Attorney General Greg Abbott pivoted to a theme popular among state leaders recently: the threat to public safety of violence along the Texas-Mexico border. "The challenges that we are seeing on the border are unprecedented," Abbott said during a Thursday interview with the Texas Tribune. "The challenges to the health, safety and welfare of Texans are greater than they've ever been." Among the examples Abbott gave was "the closure of a highway in El Paso for a time period because of safety issues because ...
>> MoreDavid Dewhurst: "We spend more money on health care per capita in the United States than any other country in the world. Of the 30 developed countries in the world, we spend 2 1/2 times more than the average. Of the country that spends the second most per capita, Switzerland, we spend 175 percent more."
Aug 31st
Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst opposes the health care overhaul carried into law by Democrats this spring, but he agrees that something needs to be done because "we spend more money on health care per capita in the United States than any other country in the world," Dewhurst said during an Aug. 25 meeting with the Austin American-Statesman editorial board. "Of the 30 developed countries in the world," he said, "we spend 2 1/2 times more than the average. Of the country that spends the second most per capita, Switzerland, we spend 175 percent more." Dewhurst didn't respond to ...
>> MoreBill White: Says most of Perry's chiefs of staff have been lobbyists.
Aug 30th
Democratic gubernatorial nominee Bill White has vowed to tighten rules restricting state employees from working as lobbyists, recently noting that Perry's top staffers have kept the revolving door spinning. "Most of his chiefs of staff have been lobbyists," White said to a crowd of about 35 people in the North Texas town of Crowell on Aug. 14. White was more specific in an ethics reform proposal he released in April: "Five of seven Perry chiefs of staff have been lobbyists." Quick aside: State law regulates lobbying, defined as "direct communications" with members of state agencies, the ...
>> MoreBack to Basics: Gov. Rick Perry "has overseen the highest Texas unemployment in 22 years."
Aug 28th
In a full-page ad that ran Tuesday in newspapers across Texas, including the Austin American-Statesman, a political action group asks voters to "tell Rick Perry to stop cowering and face Texans like a man." It's the latest salvo in the crossfire over which gubernatorial candidate is afraid to debate: Democrat Bill White or GOP incumbent Rick Perry, who says he's waiting for White to release more of his income tax returns. The ad, paid for by Back to Basics, a pro-White PAC, claims Perry is scared to "defend his miserable record." Among its charges: Perry, who's ...
>> MoreJohn Cornyn: "Taxpayer money will provide iPod Touch devices to high school students in Utah, BlackBerry smart phones to smokers who kick the habit and funding for a study of exotic ants in East Africa."
Aug 24th
Sen. John Cornyn, the junior Republican from Texas, isn't running for re-election this year, but he's sounding a similar tenet as his colleagues squaring off with Democrats: spending bad. In an Aug. 3 press release, Cornyn touted the latest in a series of three stimulus reports by Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Tom Coburn, R-Okla., crowning 100 projects funded with stimulus money as examples of wasteful spending. "As summer barbecues pop up in backyards across the country, another kind of pork is making its way to a gratuitous study or project near you," Cornyn said. "This new ...
>> MoreDebbie Riddle: "Over 81 percent of the babies that are born at LBJ Hospital right here in Houston are born of women who are not here legally."
Aug 23rd
State Rep. Debbie Riddle, R-Tomball, has long expressed concerns about illegal immigration. She sounded that theme anew Aug. 10 during an appearance on CNN, telling host Anderson Cooper that mothers who are illegal residents routinely have babies in the United States to "anchor" their families in this country. "The fact is it is documented," Riddle said. "Over 81 percent of the babies that are born at LBJ Hospital right here in Houston are born of women who are not here legally. It is well-known that women come over here, cross the border in order to have the babies ...
